Welcome

Compassion for the Disabled Uganda is a registered non-profit founded by journalist Mugabi Gabriel. We use media to discover and share solutions that improve the lives of people with disabilities. Our work highlights two sources of solutions: individuals with disabilities sharing insights from their lived experiences, and service providers or innovators showcasing products, services, or innovations that support diverse needs. We also connect offers of support, such as assistive devices and resources, directly to those who need them, ensuring dignity and welfare for all.

  • Over 1.3 billion people worldwide live with some form of disability (about 16% of the global population). This means that nearly 1 in 6 people experience significant difficulties in functioning, making disability one of the world’s largest minority groups.

  • 80% of persons with disabilities live in developing countries, where access to healthcare, education, and employment is often limited. Many live in poverty because disability support systems are weak or nonexistent.

  • Children with disabilities are more than twice as likely to never attend school compared to children without disabilities. This exclusion creates lifelong barriers, limiting opportunities for independence and employment.

  • Employment discrimination is still widespread — persons with disabilities are two to three times more likely to be unemployed. Even when employed, they often earn less than their peers and may work in insecure or informal jobs.

  • Disability is not just a health issue, but also a human rights issue. Many disabled people face stigma, social isolation, and lack of accessibility in public spaces. Despite this, their stories of resilience, creativity, and leadership continue to inspire movements for inclusion and equality worldwide.
